How we work with professionals As a professional working in the health, social care or voluntary sector, you will come into contact with people who are unpaid carers. The majority do not recognise themselves as carers and are unaware that they are entitled to our free support services. By working together we can identify more carers and ensure that they receive information and support throughout their caring journey. Who are carers? Carers provide unpaid care for a family member, friend or neighbour who, due to illness, disability, mental health difficulties or an addiction cannot manage without their support. In Sheffield at least 50,000 people (and probably double this number) provide unpaid care and are fundamental to the city’s health and social care system. Who are we? Sheffield Carers Centre delivers all the carer support services in the city for unpaid adult carers over the age of 18. Sheffield Young Carers provide support for carers aged 8-25 with full details available on the Sheffield Young Carers website >>> What are the benefits? Many carers are struggling with physical and mental health issues and isolation due to the demands of their caring role. When carers are identified and properly supported, they are better able to continue their caring role, which leads to better outcomes for the carer and the cared for person.
